Stswékstem Engineered Waste Management Facility

The Stswékstem Engineered Waste Management Facility is located on the traditional territory of the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc Nation (TteS), across the Thompson River in northeastern Kamloops.

The newly constructed facility is a Joint-Venture development between TteS and Grassland Organics and is unique in its ability to accept multiple waste streams at a single location and redirect materials away from the landfill toward more sustainable uses.

Key features of the operation include:

• The utilization of innovative technology and industry best practices, as well as robust environmental monitoring methods in all aspects of the operation;
• A double-lined landfill facility with a leachate collection infrastructure;
• Environmental benefits include waste diversion away from landfills, greenhouse gas emissions reductions, and wildlife protection measures including species-at-risk.

Waste management services available to the community at the Stswékstem Engineered Waste Management Facility include:

• An organic matter compost facility with the capacity to convert all locally generated food and yard waste from the City of Kamloops and the surrounding TNR District, into nutrient-rich topsoil;
• Demolition, land-clearing, and construction material depot;
• Residential and commercial drop-off services for municipal solid waste;
• Hydrovac truck solidification sumps for non-hazardous material;
• The sale of locally generated, nutrient rich, organic topsoil.
